Project Description:

The KAJASTUS project is a nationwide project focused on developing the recovery and utilization of landfill gas. The project’s key areas of focus include the development of landfill gas recovery methods, modeling of landfill gas generation, providing background infomration and pilot reports, and broad dissemination of information.

The primary objective is to create nationwide benefits for all stakeholders working with landfill gas and therefore ensure that as much landfill gas as possible is utilized efficiently. This strongly contributes to achieving national climate targets by reducing methane emissions from landfills.

Within the project, activities include the development of a measurement and control tool for more efficient landfill gas recovery, implementation of pilot projects to improve gas production and recovery, and creation of future gas production roadmap frameworks for all waste management companies.

The main output of the project is a compiled publication that includes the following:

  1. The current state of landfill gas collection and utilization in Finland and Europe
  2. Legislative framework
  3. Measurement and control tool & modeling tool
  4. Reports from gas production development pilots (9 in total):
    • Hydrolysis gas pilot
    • Measurement and control unit pilot (Hydryx)
    • Heat recovery from a biogas pumping station
    • Pilots of measurement, control, and modeling tools in waste management companies (4 cases)
    • Irrigation pilot
    • Hooding pilot
  5. Process description of landfill gas data collection
  6. Annual cycle for gas measurements
  7. Future gas upgrading and treatment technologies
  8. Gas production roadmaps

In addition, the project will establish a nationwide forum specializing in landfill gas, which will continue its activities even after the project has ended.

The project is funded by Economic Development Centre of Northern Finland through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Project results will be published collectively in the Data Bank.
